Understanding Oestrogen Dominance pt.2.

Restoring Hormonal Harmony with Chinese Medicine

In Chinese medicine, what we call oestrogen dominance is often understood as an imbalance of Liver Qi — the energy responsible for smooth emotional flow, menstrual regularity, and detoxification.

When Liver Qi becomes stagnant (often from stress, poor diet, or lack of movement), it disrupts the flow of Qi and Blood through the body. Over time, this can lead to symptoms such as PMS, irritability, breast tenderness, fatigue, and painful or heavy periods.

If the stagnation persists, it can transform into internal Heat or combine with Dampness, setting the stage for fibroids, cysts, or weight gain.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs Help

Acupuncture works by restoring harmony to the body’s internal systems.
By selecting points that regulate Liver Qi, calm the nervous system, and improve blood flow, we can ease symptoms like mood swings, poor sleep, and PMS. Many of my patients also notice improvements in energy, digestion, and mental clarity after a few sessions.

Chinese herbal medicine offers an additional, personalised layer of treatment. Herbs such as Chai Hu (Bupleurum), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis), Bai Shao (White Peony), and Fu Ling (Poria) are often combined to smooth Qi, nourish Blood, and clear internal Heat or Dampness — depending on the individual pattern.
Every formula is tailored to the person, not just the diagnosis, helping to rebalance hormones from the inside out.

Supporting Your Body at Home

Alongside treatment, simple lifestyle adjustments can make a real difference:

  • Choose organic foods where possible
  • Avoid plastics and non-stick cookware — glass and stainless steel are safer alternatives
  • Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cauliflower
  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine
  • Incorporate daily movement, even gentle walking
  • Practise relaxation and breathing techniques to soothe the Liver and calm the mind

Ready to Begin Your Rebalance Journey?

If you recognise yourself in these symptoms, or you suspect your hormones are out of sync, you don’t have to manage it alone.
Through acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and a tailored lifestyle plan, it’s possible to restore natural hormonal balance and feel more energised, clear, and connected with your body again.
